My research project
AI-assisted design of cryoprotective agentsMy PhD looks at how artificial intelligence can help design better cryoprotective agents (CPAs) for organ preservation.
Right now, donated organs can only be preserved for a limited time, so many go unused due to being damaged.
Cryopreservation could change that, but it's a hard problem because so many factors determine tissue survivability at once: cooling rate, warming rate, ice crystal formation, and CPA toxicity. No single method captures all of this.
This PhD considers a multimodal solution. Machine learning will be used to identify patterns in known CPAs and predict promising new candidates, while mechanistic modelling will help incorporate underlying physical and biological constraints. Agent-based modelling will also be used to simulate how CPAs behave within target tissues.
Each method addresses a problem that no single approach could address, and together they give a fuller picture than any would alone.
