Why did you choose to study your course at ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½?

I chose the University of ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ because the course felt like the right balance between theory and practical application. I didn’t just want to learn concepts - I wanted to understand how they actually play out in the workplace. The CIPD accreditation was also a big factor, as it’s so well recognised in the HR field. The modules, especially areas like employment law, felt really relevant, and at master’s level I was focused on gaining knowledge I could genuinely use in my career. 

What were the best things about your course and about ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½?

What stood out most about my course was how approachable the lecturers were. They explained concepts clearly, set well-structured assignments, and were always open to questions, which made it much easier to stay engaged and confident in the material. There are also many opportunities to really be involved like being course rep! I really enjoyed it and feel like it added a lot to my overall experience as a postgrad!

I also really enjoyed the campus environment at the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½. It was beautiful and feels really peaceful and the library facilities were excellent, with designated quiet areas that were perfect for well-focused work.

Another highlight was the careers support. I made full use of the careers department, from mock interviews to CV advice, which was incredibly helpful in preparing for opportunities after my course.

What were the best things about life at ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ as a postgraduate student?

Life as a postgraduate student at the ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ was both focused and flexible. Even though I didn’t live on campus, I still felt very connected to the university environment. The campus has a self-contained feel, which made it easy to come in, be productive, and make the most of the facilities.  What I appreciated most about postgraduate life was the balance between independence and support. 

You’re given the space to manage your own time, but there’s always help available, whether from lecturers or the careers team, or even the library services.

What do you do now and what do you enjoy most about it?

I’m currently on an HR graduate programme at RWE and am just finishing my final six-month rotation. Over the past two years, I’ve had the opportunity to experience different areas of HR, which has been incredibly valuable in helping me understand where my interests lie.

One of the highlights was spending six months in New York City, which gave me a completely different perspective both professionally and personally. Overall, what I’ve enjoyed most is the variety; each rotation has challenged me to learn something new and adapt quickly, which has played a key role in my development.

My next step will be completing a one-year fixed-term contract as an HR Advisor, where I’m looking forward to building on the skills and experience I’ve gained so far.

What is your advice for current students, for their time at ÌìÃÀ´«Ã½ and also if they want to get into your field of work?

I’d say really make the most of your time by asking questions and properly understanding the material; it genuinely comes back around and helps you later on. Don’t be afraid to engage with your lecturers, as they have so much insight to offer.  Choose a dissertation topic you genuinely enjoy, as you’ll be spending a lot of time on it. Having a real interest in the topic makes the process much more engaging and ultimately leads to a better outcome. 

Also, take advantage of the careers support available. Go to careers fairs, speak to employers, and put yourself out there - even if nothing immediate comes from it, it’s great practice and builds your confidence. 

Those small steps add up and make a big difference when you’re applying for roles and start applying early! Overall, the postgraduate course goes by so quick! Enjoy the time learning new material and making new friends.
